Good morning everybody!
Yesterday, we studied how society and economic was during the Early Modern Age in Spain. Today, we are going to study its culture, architecture and art. You can find it in page 182 of your textbook.
5.3. CULTURE, ARCHITECTURE AND ART.
First of all, we are going to listen and copy the vocabulary related to this part of the unit: LISTENING
GROTESQUE: decoration that combines foliage with monstrous figures. (Arte grotesco: arte que combina decoración vegetal con figuras monstruosas, por ejemplo, las gárgolas).
SEMINARY: place where men study to become priests. (Seminario).
- Thought and literary:
As we have already studied, Humanism was the intellectual movement that was predominant in the 16th century. There were several renowned humanists in Spain, such as Antonio de Nebrija or Juan Luis Vives.
Also, we could remark some literary figures, included Garcilaso de la Vega and Fray Luis de León. The most significant novel was El Lazarillo de Tormes.
- Architecture and art:
Renaissance architecture and art spread throughout Spain from the 16th century onwards. We can find different styles and artistic expressions during this period:
* Plateresque: this is the façade of the University of Salamanca.
This façade was made between 1529 and 1533. It is similar to an altarpiece, divided into three bodies and, in the middle of them, you can appreciate a medallion that contains a portrait of the Catholic Monarchs
* Classicism: this example is from the Palace of Carlos V in Granada:
The Catholic Monarchs tried to mantain the islamic architecture, but their grandson, Carlos I, decided to change it. The construction finished in 1572 and it was inspired by the Ancient Roman and Greek architecture.
* Herrerian: this is a picture of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial:
This building was started to be constructed in the year 1561, trying to remember the victory of San Quintin (1557) in the day of San Lorenzo. Due to the fact that San Lorenzo died being burned in a grill, the plan of this building has this shape.
Concerning to sculpture and painting, we have to remark:
For example, this is The sacrifice of Isaac, made by Alonso de Berruguete. It is made on wood and has some details remarked in gold. This sculpture is too much more expressive than in the past:
One picture made by the Greco is this one called The baptism of Christ, painted in 1609. El Greco is known for making the shapes too elongated. It is said that this artist used to do it because a vision problem.
Now, look for one example of one of these artistic styles that we have just studied (you can choose among architecture, sculpture and painting) and coment it briefly in your notebook.
