2º A BILINGÜE: CLASE DEL 28 DE MAYO DE 2020
Good morning everybody!
Last Tuesday, we studied the vocabulary linked to culture, architecture and art in Renaissance. Today, we are going to study their main feautures.
4.1. CULTURE.
There were a lot of advances in science, such as in cartography, history, biology, zoology or engineering. Thanks to the printing press, knowledge could spread faster and many more people had access to culture.
4.2. RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE AND ART.
During the 15th and 16th centuries the artistic style known as Renaissance was developed. It was inspired by the classical architecture and art of Ancient Greek and Rome.
- Architecture.
It was characterised by the use of feautures inspired by the ancient world, such as semicircular arches, domes and Corinthian columns. Churches often had Latin-cross plans, Greek-cross plans or circular plans.
During the 15th century, we can remark some artists, such as Filippo Brunelleschi, who designed the dome of Florence Cathedral:
The dome of Florence Cathedral is one of the bests examples of how architecture developed during this century, making buildings even more complicated.
Also, Leon Battista Alberti is one of the most outstanding artists of the 15th century, who designed the façade of the Church of Santa Maria Novella:
During the 16th century the Renaissance style continued in the hands of authors as Donato Bramante, who designed the Tempietto at San Pietro in Montorio:
And, finally, we have to remember Michelangelo, the artist that designed the dome of the new St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City.
- Sculpture:
Sculptures depicted religious and mythological themes, but there were also portraits. At this stage, sculpture was characterised by the beauty and idealisation of the figures. Some of the most important Renaissance sculptors were Ghiberti, Donatello or Michelangelo.
This picture shows the Gates of Paradise in the baptistery of Florence Cathedral, made by Ghiberti:
- Painting:
The main techniques were fresco for painting in the walls and oil painting or tempera for painting on canvas or wood panels. Themes became more varied than in comparison to the past. Figures are natural, have more volume and are more realistic. Scenes appear to have depth thanks to the use of perspective. The main artists of the 15th century were Fra Angelico, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca and Botticelli, meanwhile during the 16th century the outstanding artists were Leonardo da Vinci, Rafael or Michelangelo.
