Good morning everybody!
Yesterday, we started a new unit: The Early Modern Period. We made some kind of introduction and today we are going to start the first part: Early Modern Europe.

1. EARLY MODERN EUROPE

First of all, listen and copy in your notebook the vocabulary: LISTENING
DIPLOMACY: work of people responsible for the international relations of a country or territory. (Diplomacia. Las relaciones diplomáticas surgieron por primera vez a partir del siglo XV y XVI con la aparición de los Estados modernos y de las monarquías más fuertes). 
HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: central European empire, created in the 10th century and heir to the Carolingiam Empire. (Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico. Imperio creado en el siglo X por la dinastía Otónida y que fue heredero del Imperio Carolingio. Desapareció en el siglo XIX). 

The fall of the Constantinople to the Turks in the year 1453 supposed the end of the Middle Ages and a new historical period known as the Early Modern Period, which lasted until the year 1789.

1.1. THE MODERN STATE
In several European countries (specially in Spain, Portugal, England and France) the modern state emerged. It was a new political system ruled by authoritarian monarchs. The kings succeeded in exerting their authority over the feudal lords using various methods:
1. The creation of a permanent army formed of professional soldiers. For example, there were the Tercios in Spain.

2. The application of common laws in al the territories. At this moment, there were several legal codes that appeared.
3. The organisation of the administration, with government officials who worked for the monarchs. We can say that civil servants and bureaucracy were created from the 15th century.
4. The development of diplomacy to defend their interests abroad.
