2º A BILINGÜE: CLASE DEL 28 DE ABRIL DE 2020

Good morning everybody!
Yesterday, we started the chapter of our unit that talks about culture, architecture and art. Today we are going to start to study about how culture was during the 11th and 12th centuries. You can find it in page 136 of your textbook.

4.1. CULTURE
During the Middle Ages, the first universities were founded throughout Europe. For example, Oxford was founded in the 13th century in England. Also, here in Spain, we can talk about the university of Palencia, Salamanca or Valladolid. How did they look like?
- They consisted of communities of teachers and students who organised their learning in a very autonomous way.
- Studies were divided into faculties: Law, Art, Medicine and Theology.
From the 12th century, the writings of the Greek philosopher Aristotle, which had been translated in al-Andalus, were disseminated throughout Christian Europe.
Here, you have an image of Aristotle. For first time in the Middle Ages, raison and faith fought one against the other:
Several advances were made in mathematics and optics. The studies carried out in optics had practical applications, such as the invention of lenses. And in medicine, progress was made in the understanding of human anatomy. However, medicine did not understand many diagnosis and illnesses yet.
Here, I lend you a scheme with all these information that may help you to study this part of the unit.
